Hveravellir
Renowned for its beauty, Hveravellir Nature Reserve is a geothermal area fenced in by an abundance of adventure. For those travellers craving a thrill, nearby you’ll stumble upon bubbling mud pools, steaming fumaroles and extraordinary lava mounds.
Nestled in Iceland’s central highlands, Hveravellir is one of the last wilderness areas of Europe and the ideal camping spot. Not only is it a beautiful location, but it’s also extremely fitting for travellers. The Highland road F35 is the route many Icelanders use to travel to and from the North to the South regions and is, conveniently, within easy reach of Hveravellir.
Hveravellir is considered one of the most stunning nature reserves in Iceland and it’s incredibly easy to navigate your way around the area. There’s a variety of horse-riding and hiking trails to explore, for both beginners and experts, so you can take advantage of travelling by foot or horse. No need to worry, horses are available for hire in Hveravellir so you won’t have to pack your own!

Þórsmörk
One of our favourite camping spots, Slyppugil, is a small & quiet camping ground hidden amongst the mountains of the Þórsmörk Nature Reserve. Located away from the more crowded areas, this is the perfect camping ground for true nature lovers and anyone looking for that ‘wild camping’ experience.
There are no kitchen or electricity facilities, however in proper camping spirit, barbeques are permitted. Just be sure to clear any mess to help preserve Iceland’s natural beauty.
Not only is Þórsmörk nature reserve considered one of the most scenic locations in Iceland, its endless hills, mountains and valleys make it a hiker’s paradise. Surrounded by some of Iceland’s most famous hiking routes, it is the starting and ending point for a great deal of hiking trails.

Þakgil
Located in the canyon, sheltered on all sides by mountains, Þakgil is considered to be Iceland’s best kept secret. The drive down the long gravel road leading to the campsite is an experience in itself, the extraordinary rock formations and breathtaking landscapes are enough to fill up your camera’s memory.
A quirky feature of the Þakgil camping site is the natural cave used as the dining area which seats 60 people. Here you will find tables & benches, a fire place & barbeque, along with candle holders on the walls to light up the darkness of the night.
Þakgil is the surrounded by endless adventure and activity, there are awesome caves to be explored and countless hiking trails.
