A prestigious UK luxury travel magazine, The Luxury Travel Guide, has selected South Iceland as ‘Activity Destination of the Year 2018’ – and we think they’re spot on! Of course, we’re pretty biased at Midgard Base Camp, but now you don’t have to listen to us, just look at the award. Well, you can listen to us too; a combination of both is best.
Why South Iceland?
To us, it’s not really surprising that South Iceland won the award; at Midgard we think it’s the greatest place on Earth! Why? Well now you’re asking…
We could go on for days about why we love South Iceland so we’ll try and keep this as brief as possible.
Firstly, there’s the abundance of different states of nature that you can see. Despite general assumptions, Iceland isn’t a barren, frost covered land or giant ice cube – although we do have a whole lot of extraordinary glaciers, plenty of snow and opportunities to get familiar with skis and snow-bikes, we also have loads of sunny green-spaces. Mossy mountains, waterfalls and meandering rivers often come as a pretty great surprise to visitors. You can also check out volcanoes and black-sand beaches if you fancy it. Why not – we have it all!
South Iceland is home to a wealth of incredible sights that are breathtaking examples of natural beauty, including Reynisfjara, Gulfoss, Geysir, the Golden Circle, Skógarfoss and Seljalandsfoss.
That’s not to mention all the stunning UNESCO designed Geoparks, including Fjallabak, Eyjafjallajökull and Þórsmörk.
Nature really did a good job when it formed Iceland!
