Midgard Base Camp and our tour and travel agency, Midgard Adventure, are located in the lovely town of Hvolsvöllur in South Iceland. In our opinion, it’s the best place to stay in Iceland if you’re on the hunt for adventure, which is exactly why we chose it!
We could talk about why we love Hvolsvöllur forever, but unfortunately, we don’t have that kind of time, so we’re going to try and keep to just a few points. Six, to be precise!
So, without further ado, here are six reasons why our Midgard team fell head over heel in love with Hvolsvöllur – and why you will too.
1) It’s at the Centre of South Iceland
You really can’t get a better location in South Iceland than Hvolsvöllur. It’s about a one hour drive from the capital city of Reykjavik, and close to the main airport (about a two-hour drive) making it easy to get here when you arrive!
It’s also right next to the ring road, making it simple to jump back on and continue your travels through South Iceland on this main route.

2) It’s a Tiny Town!
With only around 800-900 people living here, Hvolsvöllur is a quiet, peaceful town. The locals are friendly and welcoming to guests and are always popping into Midgard to join in with our events and activities!
The small population size gives our town a character and charm that’s often lost in the modern world. We still value community spirit and have a lot of love for where we live. Visit Hvolsvöllur for yourself and you’ll see exactly what we mean.
3) It’s Beautiful
There’s no denying the beauty of Hvolsvöllur. Surrounded by rolling, lush fields, snow-capped mountains and awesome volcanoes, the views from our little town are something else! The abundance of nature means that you only have to walk a short distance until you’re surrounded by nothing other than the un-touched landscape of South Iceland.
4) Everything you Need
The town of Hvolsvöllur has everything you need, including restaurants, a bank, shops, a swimming pool and much more. It’s a great place to call home as you travel around South Iceland. You can experience authentic Icelandic life and enjoy everything our culture has to offer right from this cute little town.
5) Geographical Wonder
Iceland is known around the world for its abundance of geographical wonders, and Hvolsvöllur is close to many of those that are unmissable when you visit.
Some worth mentioning include Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, an ethereal sea of blue and white glaciers, the powerful waterfalls ofSeljalandsfoss and the incredible mountains of Landmannalaugar in the highlands.
6) Rich in History
Hvolsvöllur is a place that’s brimming in history. With the setting of one of the most famous Icelandic saga’s, the tale of Burnt Njal, being set all around the landscape of our town, it’s a great place to immerse yourself in our rich and colourful past.
If you want to learn more about the world-renowned Sagas, you can head over to the Saga Centre in Hvolsvöllur to learn all about them. It’s a pretty great way to spend a couple of hours and has a whole lot of awesome stuff to see and do!
